Reading your pay stub

  • Gross pay: hours × rate (or salary ÷ pay periods), plus overtime, vacation pay and taxable benefits.
  • Income tax: federal and provincial tax together. Your employer withholds it based on your TD1 forms.
  • CPP / QPP: your pension contribution. Your employer pays the same amount again on top.
  • EI: employment insurance. Your employer pays 1.4 times your premium.
  • Net pay: what is deposited.

Questions people ask

+What deductions come off a Canadian paycheque?

Every employee pays federal and provincial income tax, CPP (QPP in Quebec) and EI premiums. Quebec workers also pay QPIP. Your stub may also show pension plan contributions, union dues, group benefits and any extra tax you asked for. In 2026, CPP is 5.95% of pay above the $3,500 yearly exemption and EI is 1.63%.

+Why did my CPP and EI deductions stop late in the year?

Both have a yearly maximum. Once your earnings pass $68,900 you stop paying EI, and once they pass $74,600 regular CPP stops (CPP2 continues up to $85,000). They start again in January, so your first cheque of the year is smaller.

+How accurate is this pay stub calculator?

It annualizes your pay, works out the year’s tax, CPP and EI, and divides by your number of pay periods. Payroll software uses the CRA formulas cheque by cheque, so a single stub can be a few dollars different, especially for the first and last cheques of the year or if your hours change.
