Overtime Calculator
Every province sets its own overtime rule. Some count by the week only, some by the day as well, and two set overtime from the minimum wage. Enter your hours for one week and see which hours are overtime and what the week pays before tax.
Overtime starts after 44 hours in a work week, at 1.5 times your regular rate. Long days alone do not earn overtime.
- • A written averaging agreement can average hours over 2 to 4 weeks.
- • With a written agreement, overtime can be taken as 1.5 hours of paid time off for each overtime hour, within 3 months.
- • Some jobs are exempt or have a higher threshold (O. Reg. 285/01).

Questions people ask
+When does overtime start in Canada?
It depends on where you work. Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island start after 44 hours a week; Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador after 40; Nova Scotia after 48. Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the territories and federally regulated workplaces also count hours over 8 in a day.
+Is overtime always time and a half?
The rate is 1.5 almost everywhere, but in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador the legal minimum is 1.5 times the minimum wage, not 1.5 times your own wage. British Columbia also pays double time after 12 hours in a day.
+How are daily and weekly overtime combined?
Where both apply, you get whichever gives more overtime hours, so the same hour is never counted twice. In British Columbia that works out the same as counting only the first 8 hours of each day toward the weekly 40.
+Does a holiday week change overtime?
In Saskatchewan, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, overtime starts after 32 hours in a week with a general holiday. Under the Canada Labour Code, the 40 drops by 8 hours for each holiday. In Manitoba a general holiday counts as hours worked.
